Cutting Wood with an Abrasive Water Jet

June 25, 2014 by Terrance Hamilton Leave a Comment

Tools and papers with sketches on the table. technical drawingsIf your cutting project involves wood, you’re in luck.  Techmoon abrasive water jets are the perfect machines to use to trim and shape all kinds of wood materials.

Prep the machine

Fill the tank with an abrasive-like fine-grit sand.  This helps the water cut through the wood faster and more effectively.  Fill the tank to the fill line only, otherwise the extra sand could clog your water jet.

Plug in the pump

An outdoor main such as a fire hydrant offers the highest pressure of water.  After you’ve connected the pump to a water main, connect the pump hose to the water line on the water jet cutter.  Tighten the hose so that no water escapes from the machine and breaks the flow of high-pressure water.

Check nozzle

Make sure that the abrasive injector nozzle connects to the water jet stream.  Set the wood onto the cutting base and secure in place with clamps or the machine’s support grid.

Program the controller

Since pressure from the water can be somewhat unstable, it is best to allow a computer to control the stream of water.  Straight cuts are always easiest to program, but you can also do more intricate cuts using the preprogrammed ones already in the computer.

Wear appropriate safety gear

Put on safety goggles and wear ear protection as well.  Turn on the water jet and allow the computer to guide the cutting nozzle and cut the wood.  Make sure the sand and water gets properly disposed of in the catch tank beneath the cutting surface.

At Techmoon, we build high-quality abrasive water jets, all according to your specifications, that can cut through wood as well as plastic, stone and metal.  When you’re looking for a green and economical cutting solution, contact us!
